Preventive Medicine:

We believe the best medicine is preventive medicine. Our goal is to keep your pet as active and healthy for as long as possible. This involves:
  • Regular thorough physical exams
  • Customized vaccine schedules
  • Regular parasite exams & preventatives
  • Routine bloodwork when your pet is older
  • Client education

Personalized Care:

Happy Clients!
At OVVH, we schedule:
  • Thirty-minute appointment times for any sick animal and for intial puppy and kitten visits.

In-house Laboratory:

LaserCyte Blood Machine
  • OVVH has recently added a top-of-the-line machine to run your pet’s Complete Blood Counts (CBC). This machine, called the LaserCyte, uses cutting-edge technology to accurately determine the precise numbers and types of cells. For red blood cells, the machine tells us the total number, their size and hemoglobin concentration. For white blood cells (WBC), the LaserCyte is able to differentiate between the five different types of WBC and give us total counts of each. The LaserCyte also is able to determine platelet counts. In an emergency situation, having this information during your appointment is essential. For pre-anesthetic testing, this information is sometimes vitally important. Our previous CBC machine was very good and many hospitals still use that type of machine, however, the LaserCyte allows us to get more complete information and that helps us take better care of your pet.
  • Chemistry analyzer to measure kidney values, liver enzymes, blood sugar, pancreatic values and more.
  • Fecal tests to diagnose intestinal and some lung parasites.
  • Heartworm test kits often allow us to give you results before the appointment is over.
  • Giardia test kits allow us to diagnose this contagious intestinal disease (to dogs, cats and humans!) within 10 minutes.
  • FeLV and FIV tests give us the ability to diagnose or rule out these dangerous feline viruses during your appointment
  • Top-of-the-line culture plates to diagnose the ringworm fungus.

Radiology:

  • Modern radiograph machine uses technology which allows fewer x-rays to be directed into the patient to produce a high-quality radiograph.

Ultrasound:

An excellent Aloka machine, made for humans, allows the doctors at OVVH to scan your pet's body using noninvasive technology. Abdominal and heart ultrasound exams are tests most commonly performed, however the ultrasound machine can be used for many other purposes.

Surgery:

  • The doctors at OVVH are able to perform many surgeries thanks to the hospital's well-stocked surgery suite, which is separated from the primary treatment area. Routine surgeries such as ovariohysterectomies (spays) and orchiectomies (neuters) are commonplace. More involved surgeries are regularly performed also: mass removals, intestinal surgeries, spleen removals, bladder stone removals, eye surgeries and many others.
  • Dr Christmus performing surgery
  • During a surgery, the veterinarians and technicians at Oakton-Vienna Veterinary Hospital use state of the art equipment to assure your pet's safety. Our trained staff use the following equipment to obtain a complete picture of your pet's vital signs during any procedure requiring anasthesia:
    • Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) to monitor heart activity
    • Pulse Oximeter to monitor the blood's oxygen (O2) saturation
    • The capnograph completes the picture by monitoring the patient's respiratory carbon dioxide (CO2) levels
Experience and equipment work together at OVVH to provide you with the highest assurance level possible during any necessary surgery.

Dentistry:

  • Dental prophylaxis includes thorough evaluation of teeth and gums, ultrasonic scaling to remove tartar above the gums, hand scaling to remove tartar under the gums, polishing of all tooth surfaces and fluoride treatment.
  • High-speed, air-driven drill allows less trauma to surrounding teeth and bone if extractions are needed.

Pain Control:

  • Every patient undergoing a potentially painful procedure is given pain relief medication.
  • OVVH stocks several oral pain relievers to control discomfort in our older patients and to send home with pets who may need some acute pain relief.
